Serguey Kalinin, a merchant’s son from Ekaterinburg, wrote of his experience [...]: ‘I was gassed by Bullecourt and my lungs are badly affected … In Bullecourt I lost image of St Nicholas, and now I am without my Mother’s blessing. I am sure this little ikone saved my life.’
