From Russian Anzacs in Australian History:
Sebastian Radetsky, a former labourer, had survived seven months at Gallipoli but was wounded here [Somme, July 1916] for the first time. After the withdrawal from Gallipoli Radetsky, who was Ukrainian, went absent without leave on Lemnos; perhaps he was trying to get back to his wife in nearby Volynia (Ukraine) — but the war machine would not let him go. He will be wounded twice more on the Western Front, but will be returned to the trenches again and again.
