From Russian Anzacs in Australian History:

One of the first Russian casualties in the 5th Division [at Armentières] was Martin Renaud, a former seaman from Riga, who received severe head wounds and was evacuated to Australia. This was his first experience of battle and he proved that what he wrote in 1911 after receiving his naturalisation certificate from the Australian authorities was no empty boast: ‘I am very proud to count myself as one of yours now and I will try to make myself worthy of it’.
