Suggestions for searching on "Russian Anzacs"

The search engine on the home page allows you to search the site in different ways:

Name

Search for a full surname or use wildcards.

Example Ivano*, Korot?off.

Names of former Russian subjects in Australian records were often Anglicised or recorded phonetically which does not coincide with the modern system of transliteration. The correct spelling of most ethnic Russian, Ukrainian, Byelorussian and some Jewish names is also provided in Cyrillic. Most of the Finnish, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian and Polish names only appear as they are written in the Australian records. I would appreciate any suggestions about the correct spelling of such names in their native languages.

Place of birth

Places of birth are followed by the names of modern countries for easier navigation  - Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and Russia. Townships are also followed by the provincial capital of the time. For Russia  broad geographical areas are also provided - Central Russia, Volga River area, Ossetia, Siberia.

Example Bestuzhevo, Riazan, Central Russia.

Searching, for instance, for the word 'Lithuania' you will get a list of all Anzacs born on the territory of modern Lithuania including ethnic Lithuanians, Poles, Jews and Russians.

Ethnic origin

This option allows you to search for all Anzacs of a particular ethnic origin irrespective of the place of their birth. Thus searching for the word 'Jewish' you will get a list of all Anzacs of Jewish origin born in Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia. To find ethnic Russians search for the expression "ethnic origin Russian" (in quotation marks). The result will show all ethnic Russians born from Warsaw to Sakhalin Island. In some cases I could not determine with confidence the ethnic origin of people born at in the territory of the modern Baltic states and Poland. They could be of Latvian, Estonian, German, Polish, Danish, Swedish etc. origin. They are recorded under the ethnic origin corresponding to the territory of their birth. For instance, Charles Gorgensen is recorded as a Latvian.

Religion

Data about religious denomination is mainly derived from enlistment applications. It was recorded by enlistment clerks and did not necessarily correspond to the actual religion of the person. Religion of many Russian Anzacs was recorded as 'Church of England'.

Ship name

You can search for the name of the ship on which a person arrived at Australia, but note that names of many ships, derived from naturalisation applications, often were recorded phonetically. At this stage only part of them, particularly those that brought immigrants from the Far East, have been verified by me and are spelt correctly.

Place of residence

All places where Russian Anzacs lived before and after the war are recorded on the fact sheet and will be found when you search for a particular town or country.

Occupation

Occupations of Russian Anzacs are recorded in the form how they appear in their service records or naturalisation applications. They are mostly uniform, but those engaged in seafaring were recorded as seamen and as sailors, those engaged in manual unqualified labour will be mostly found under the heading 'labourer' but some might be recorded as 'miner', 'bush worker', 'sleeper hewer', 'axeman' etc.

Places of enlistment

To find all Russian Anzacs who enlisted in a particular place type 'POE' and the place in quotation marks.

Example "POE Rockhampton".

Unit

To search for all Russian Anzacs who served in the particular unit search for the name of the unit according to the following patterns using quotation marks:

"9th Battalion"

"2nd Pioneer Battalion"

"5th Light Horse Regiment"

"10th Field Ambulance"

'11th FAB"

"12th LTM Battery"

"6th MG Company"

Place of service

You can find all those who served at Gallipoli, on the Western Front, in Egypt or remained in Australian depot (search for word 'Depot').

Awards

To see names of those who were awarded with special award for bravery search for the word 'awards'.

Casualties

To have a list of all those killed in action search for "KIA" (killed in action), but note that some will be recorded as "DOW" (died of wounds). Optionally, to see all fallen, including those who died from other causes, search for the words "memorial panel". Searching for the abbreviation "WIA" will provide you with a list of all those wounded in action (it will be a large list!). Searching for "POW" will list all prisoners of war.

WWII service

To find all who enlisted in the Second AIF search for the abbreviation 'WWII'.
