Among those killed at Pozières in these first days was Nicholas Sharoff — the man from the Urals who had been, the military authorities said, so ‘very anxious to serve at the front’ that he pretended to be a native of Port Douglas at his second attempt to enlist. He did serve well, even before the battle took place volunteering to join a raiding party on enemy trenches.
