Gerard Martyn Skugar, a Polish sailor from Vilno, [at Somme, August 1918] ‘single-handed, rushed and captured a machine gun and its crew’. Skugar, who was awarded the Military Medal, ‘continued to do excellent work throughout the fight’ until finally being severely wounded in head.
