From Russian Anzacs in Australian History:

Several Russians served in the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF), including Julian Szablowsky, from Poland. He had worked as a ship’s cook on Australian vessels before the war, and was the first Russian to enlist and serve outside Australia: he left Australia on 19 August 1914 as a cook on the Berrima. The AN&MEF went to take possession of the German colonies in New Guinea and in September the Germans at Rabaul (the German Pacific headquarters) surrendered; Szablowsky then returned to Australia.
